"The name ‘Staircase’ comes from a cedar staircase that was built over an impassable bluff along the Skokomish River in 1890. The staircase was constructed during an exploratory expedition led by Lieutenant Joseph P. O’Neil. The feature came to be known as ‘The Devil’s Staircase’. The air was rich with the earthy scent of wet foliage, adding to the feeling of being in an untouched paradise.
